Untitled Portraits — Anatolia — Black / 01First Light, Last Cigarette
Black and white close portrait of an older man in a flat cap drawing on a cigarette, stone walls behind him — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, Anatolia series.

Anatolia, Turkey · 2017

First Light, Last Cigarette

He pulled on the cigarette and held my eye while he did it.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

The cap and the heavy coat were worn soft from use, and the cold had not yet left the morning. Behind him the stone walls of the yard kept their old grey. I made the frame close so the smoke and the hand were part of his face.

— Sefa Yamak, Doğubayazıt. Anatolia series.
