He gave me a full open smile, the kind people give when they are not trying to look like anything.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
The lines on his face moved with it. His beanie was pulled low and the country behind him was flat and pale. I stayed close and let the grin fill the frame.
