The Herder — A Story / 03Calling Them Down
From a distance, the young herder with a stick walks across open pasture in heavy fog while the herd streams down the slope toward him — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, Anatolia series.

Rize, Turkey · 2018

Calling Them Down

Then he turned and started off, and the whole herd peeled away from me to follow him.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

I dropped back so the fog could take most of the picture. He is small over there with his stick, and the goats run as one dark line down the slope. This is the part I keep coming back to, how the land swallows almost everything and leaves only the two shapes that matter.
