The Herder — A Story / 04After the Herd
The young herder stands alone on the foggy hillside, one hand on his stick, looking at the camera with the herd now gone — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, Anatolia series.

Rize, Turkey · 2018

After the Herd

When the goats had gone over the rise he came back to me and stood still for a proper portrait.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

He rested both hands on his stick and met the lens straight on, a boy in dark clothes against a hill that is almost all white. The fog was close behind him and the grass was wet under his shoes. I thanked him, and that was the last frame before he climbed after his animals.
