The Weight of a Bird
He held the bird in both hands the way you hold something you have decided to be careful with.
This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
Behind him the mountains were under snow and the light was flat and grey. A working man in a wool cap and a checked shirt, cradling a white pigeon, the two of them still for about a second. I don't know the whole story of the bird and I didn't need it. The picture was right there in his hands.
