The Hardest Winter / 10The Weight of a Bird
A man in a wool cap cradles a white pigeon against snow-covered mountains, eastern Anatolia — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, The Hardest Winter series.

Kars, Eastern Anatolia, Turkey · 2016

The Weight of a Bird

He held the bird in both hands the way you hold something you have decided to be careful with.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

Behind him the mountains were under snow and the light was flat and grey. A working man in a wool cap and a checked shirt, cradling a white pigeon, the two of them still for about a second. I don't know the whole story of the bird and I didn't need it. The picture was right there in his hands.

— Sefa Yamak, eastern Anatolia, winter. The Hardest Winter series.
