Down Through the Snow
He was bringing the flock down the village road while it was really coming down, the houses behind him already going white.
This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
Instead of chasing the sheep I stood in the middle of the road and let them walk toward me. He had a stick across his shoulders and that unbothered look people get when snow is just the weather they live in. The whole thing moved slowly, the way these things do. I waited until the front of the flock was close enough to fill the frame and shot it there.
