The Hardest Winter / 11Everything He Owns
A small boy holds his toys close, eyes glistening, standing in the snow, Kars — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, The Hardest Winter series.

Everything He Owns

He came out into the snow holding the things that mattered to him, three toys gripped hard against his chest.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

His eyes were wet, from the cold or from something I didn't ask about. I shot from above because that is where I was standing, and he looked up at me. That upward look is most of why the picture works. I made one frame and let him go back inside where it was warm. I think about that one more than I expected to.
