The Herd at His Back
I found him out with the cattle, hood up, the animals crowding in behind him for the warmth.
This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
He didn't step away or fuss with how he looked. He held my eye and let the herd fill in behind him. His jacket had taken a beating from the work and the weather. Young men out here have a kind of calm around animals that I notice every time, and he had it. One frame, straight on.
