The Hardest Winter / 06Out of the Dark
Tight black-and-white portrait of a hooded young man with textured skin and an intense gaze, Kars — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, The Hardest Winter series.

Kars, Eastern Anatolia, Turkey · 2017

Out of the Dark

He pulled his hood in against the wind and looked straight down the lens, and I left it exactly there.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

Some people you have to coax. He was not one of them. The skin told its own story, roughed up a little by the cold, and his eyes didn't move while I worked. I have learned not to talk a face like that into softening. The look he gave me was the photograph, so I just took it.
