The Hardest Winter / 05An Understanding
A bearded man in a wool cap presses his forehead to a horse's, eye to eye in winter — fine art black-and-white portrait by Sefa Yamak, The Hardest Winter series.

Kars, Eastern Anatolia, Turkey · 2016

An Understanding

A man and his horse, head to head, in the cold before the games start.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

I don't think either of them paid me much attention. This wasn't something he did for the camera. It is just how he stands with the animal while they wait, close enough to breathe the same air. The horse kept one eye half on me. I stayed quiet and made the frame from the side so both their faces would be in it.
