The Card Players — A Story / 01His Turn to Deal
A white-haired man in a black fleece studies the cards in his hands at an outdoor table, a king lying face up near the edge — street photograph by Sefa Yamak, Istanbul series.

Istanbul, Turkey · 2018

His Turn to Deal

A different man now, a different table, somewhere with a whitewashed wall and an empty chair waiting.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

He is reading his hand and not letting anything show. The king sits face up by the edge like a small piece of luck already spent. I stayed quiet and let him think.
