The Cane — A Story / 03Who He Used to Be
An elderly man holds a small old portrait photograph of a younger mustached man toward the camera, his own face soft behind it — street photograph by Sefa Yamak, Istanbul series.

Istanbul, Turkey · 2018

Who He Used to Be

He reached into his pocket and held the small photo up before I could ask anything.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

It is him, decades back, with a dark mustache and a steady stare. I focused on the picture and let his living face blur, which felt like the honest thing to do. Two of him in one frame, and he wanted me to see both.
