The Cane — A Story / 01The Weight He Leans On
An elderly man in a cap and plaid shirt rests both the frame and his gaze on a worn wooden cane — street photograph by Sefa Yamak, Istanbul series.

The Weight He Leans On

I crouched a little so the cane came first and his face stayed soft behind it.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

His hand is the part that is in focus, every knuckle and crack of it. He did not pose. He just let me look at the thing that holds him up.
