The Cane — A Story / 02Then He Laughed
The same capped man leans both hands on his cane and laughs with his mouth wide open in front of a shop window — street photograph by Sefa Yamak, Istanbul series.

Istanbul, Turkey · 2018

Then He Laughed

A second later something I said landed and the whole face opened up.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

Both hands are folded on the cane now, like the laugh needed somewhere to lean too. Behind him the glass holds another man sitting in the dark of the shop. I kept the shutter going because this is the version of him I want to remember.
