Behind the Schoolbook
He lifted the exercise book in front of his own face just as I raised the camera, so what I got was the cover photo of schoolchildren and a mountain lake, with his painted headdress rising above it.
This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
I think it was a small joke at my expense, and I let it be one. His hand and the prayer beads at his wrist are the only parts of him left in plain view. I still like that he decided how much of himself to give.
