Untitled Portraits — Nepal / 02Behind the Schoolbook
A man with painted faces in his headdress holds an open exercise book in front of his face against a brick wall — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, Nepal series.

Kathmandu, Nepal · 2017

Behind the Schoolbook

He lifted the exercise book in front of his own face just as I raised the camera, so what I got was the cover photo of schoolchildren and a mountain lake, with his painted headdress rising above it.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

I think it was a small joke at my expense, and I let it be one. His hand and the prayer beads at his wrist are the only parts of him left in plain view. I still like that he decided how much of himself to give.
