He sat very still while I worked.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
The pale clay on his forehead had dried and cracked a little, and his beard went on past the edge of the frame. I am not sure he was looking at me, or past me. We didn't share much language, so mostly there was just the quiet of waiting for the shutter.
