He came through the crowd with the whole morning's bread stacked above his head.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
The tray sat flat on his hair and he kept his neck very still, eyes fixed somewhere past me. People in dark coats moved around him without looking up. I held the frame for the moment his face came clear under all that weight.
