Untitled Portraits — Istanbul / 18Smoke and Headscarf
An older woman in a patterned headscarf smokes a cigarette, looking off into the dark — street photograph by Sefa Yamak, Istanbul series.

Istanbul, Turkey · 2018

Smoke and Headscarf

She held a cigarette to her lips and looked off into the dark, her hand resting against her chin.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

The headscarf was tied with a printed, lace-edged cloth. Smoke rose thin past her face. She was somewhere in her own thoughts and I tried not to break it.
