He held the kid out in both hands, steady, the way you hold something newborn.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
The mountains behind him still had snow on them and the cloud sat low over the village roofs. His jacket was old pinstripe and his face was kind. The little goat looked straight into the lens.
