Behind the Frost
Two boys pushed up close behind a window, the glass half furred with frost and half covered by a lace curtain.
This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
One was grinning, the other dead serious, both working out what to make of the man standing outside with a camera. The glass did half the work, softening them and laying its patterns across their faces. I didn't knock or ask them to move. I took it through the window before they got bored and went off to do something else.
