Untitled Portraits — India / 14Through the Smoke
A close view of an elderly man in an orange head wrap drawing on a small clay pipe, his face and long grey beard partly hidden behind a curl of smoke — fine art portrait by Sefa Yamak, India series.

Varanasi, India · 2018

Through the Smoke

I got close for this one, closer than felt polite, but he didn't seem to mind.

This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.

The smoke moved across his face just as he drew on the pipe and I pressed the shutter without really thinking. For a second I lost his eyes behind it. I'm not sure I could repeat the timing if I tried.
