Where the Years Show
He was finishing a cigarette outside a shop with the shutters already down for the night.
This story imagines, it does not document. It is what the photograph made me feel.
I asked if I could take his picture and he tilted his head, which I took as a yes. There were a lot of winters in that face. The flat cap, the grey stubble, the lines that come from sixty-odd years of squinting into wind and smoke. He didn't smile and I didn't want him to. He looked back at the lens like he had watched plenty of people come through with cameras and would watch plenty more.
